More than 50 residents of Zhaodong City, Heilongjiang Province were arrested on September 4, 2023 for their shared faith in Falun Gong. Two of them have since passed away, five sentenced to prison and another two faced re-arrest or harassment.
Two Passed Away
Mr. Wei Wenchen was taken to the Zhaodong City Lockup after his arrest on September 4, 2023. Due to the abuse suffered during his 15-day detention, he was diagnosed with ascites from liver cirrhosis shortly after he was released. After seven months of suffering from the disease, he died on March 23, 2024. He was 68.
Ms. Zhang Zhimin was seized at home on September 4, 2023 and taken to the Suihua City Detention Center. During a physical examination at the Suihua City Hospital, she was diagnosed with late-stage cancer. Instead of releasing her immediately, the Zhaodong City Police Department ordered her daughter to travel over 1,500 miles from Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, to Zhaodong and sign a statement to renounce Falun Gong on her mother’s behalf.
Ms. Zhang moved in with her daughter after her release. Yet the police in Hangzhou also came to harass and intimidate her. The mental distress further aggravated her condition. She passed away on July 9, 2024. She was 63.
Five Sentenced
Mr. Zhan Xiangjun, 52, his wife, Ms. Yuan Airong, 50, Ms. Yang Shujun, around 60, Ms. Sun Qin, around 60, and Mr. Xiong Qiliang, 46, were sentenced to prison by the Anda City Court on November 28, 2023.
Mr. Zhan was given 8.5 years and fined 20,000 yuan. His wife Ms. Yuan was given 4 years and fined 10,000 yuan. Ms. Yang was sentenced to 4.5 years and fined 10,000 yuan. Ms. Sun received 3 years. Mr. Xiong was given one year.
One Taken Back into Custody and Another Faces Ongoing Harassment
Ms. Qiao Shuzhen was detained at the Suihua City Detention Center for a month after her arrest on September 4, 2023. She was arrested again at home sometime in 2024 by Wang Lijun, the director of Zhaodong City Domestic Security Division. She has been detained since and is now facing prosecution.
Ms. Huang Shuqing was released hours after her arrest on September 4, 2023. Wang Gensheng, an officer of the Nancheng Police Station, harassed her several times in the second half of 2024 and took away the portrait of Falun Gong’s founder from her home.
